The Customer
A global security solution provider specialising in ATEX rated surveillance systems for hazardous environments. Overview has a long-term relationship with this customer, having delivered and manufactured previous custom solutions.
The Challenge
The upcoming introduction of the National Defence Authorisation Act (NDAA) 2023 will place new and broad ranging restrictions on the use of certain semiconductors in products supplied to U.S. government agencies.
The legislation will have a run-on impact on other industries that use semiconductors in their products which are considered ‘critical systems’. These restrictions will require suppliers to ensure their products are free from prohibited components.
Being proactive, our customer wanted to create an NDAA 2023 compliant Integrated Servo Drive ahead of the effective date of the regulations. The customer approached Overview, asking them to design a reliable solution that would maintain operational integrity whilst meeting any potential requirements in the emerging legislation.
Overview’s Approach
Overview responded with a structured, collaborative approach:
Discovery & Requirements Definition: A detailed workshop was held with the customer to define technical, regulatory and qualification requirements. This phase was completed within four weeks.
Component Audit & Redesign: Overview conducted a comprehensive audit of the product’s construction and supply chain, identifying components requiring replacement to meet NDAA 2023 compliance.
Rapid Prototyping & Qualification: Replacement components were sourced and qualified. Prototypes were built, tested, and validated in close partnership with the customer.
Integrated Testing & Transition: The updated product underwent rigorous testing, including over 15,000 automated regression tests. Inventory and supply chains were transitioned to support the new NDAA 2023 compliant variant.
Delivery & Production Readiness: Within six months, Overview delivered two fully NDAA compliant product variants (ATEX and Standard), ready for full rate production and capable of supporting 1,500 deliveries over the next calendar year.

Benefits to the Customer
Regulatory Compliance: The new product variants meet NDAA 2023 requirements (applicable from 2027), ensuring eligibility for U.S. government use and reducing compliance risk.
Operational Continuity: The customer could transition seamlessly to the NDAA compliant solution without disruption, despite the highly controlled nature of ATEX products, supported by Overview’s proactive communication and planned obsolescence strategy.
Scalable Production: Overview’s capability to reliably deliver high volume, compliant products, means the customer can manage fluctuating demand with confidence. This allows them to demonstrate their reliability to partners in this highly regulated market.
Long Term Partnership: The collaborative development process and transparent roadmap for obsolescence and transition gave the customer confidence to continue their long-term relationship with Overview.
Strategic Advantage: Overview’s ability to rapidly adapt to changes and deliver high quality compliant solutions at pace, ahead of schedule has given the customer a strategic advantage in their sector.
