Overview Ltd Attends Defence iQ’s Uncrewed and Autonomous Systems Conference
Overview Ltd was delighted to attend this year’s Uncrewed and Autonomous Systems Conference, hosted by Defence iQ. The event is one of the key forums for debating the future of defence technology and brings together senior military leaders, industry experts and innovators from across NATO to explore how autonomous and uncrewed platforms are reshaping contemporary and future operations.
Across two days of discussion, a recurring theme emerged: the growing tension between technological sophistication and operational practicality. One of the most thought-provoking sessions focused on the idea of achieving “risk-free” employment of autonomous systems, a goal that becomes increasingly difficult as platforms become more expensive and complex.
Participants highlighted two major challenges associated with highly exquisite systems:
- First, high costs make it difficult to field them in sufficient numbers, limiting opportunities for massed or persistent deployment.
- Second, their value inevitably lowers a commander’s tolerance for attrition. In effect, when a system carries a multi-million-pound price tag, it ceases to be a disposable tactical asset and instead becomes a strategic one, changing not only how it is used, but how often.
This dilemma sits at the heart of modern force design and the future of uncrewed operations. To deliver real advantage on the battlefield, autonomous systems must be capable of operating at scale, absorbing losses when necessary, and enabling commanders to take decisive action without hesitation.
Overview’s CEO, Graham Jones, had this to say “We believe the answer to this dilemma lies in affordability and simplicity. True operational value comes not from making platforms ever more exquisite, but from designing them to be deployable, repeatable, interoperable and when required, expendable. This philosophy underpins the design of our Podview Remote and Autonomous Sensor System.”
